Engineering Mechanics

Engineering Mechanics is an English medium textbook for B.Tech. first-year students of RTU, Kota, covering statics, kinematics and kinetics. The statics part explains the fundamental laws of mechanics, systems of forces, resultant and resolution of forces, moments and couples, free body diagrams, equilibrium and Lami's theorem. Centroid and moment of inertia are treated in detail, from centroids of lines, areas and volumes to the parallel and perpendicular axis theorems and mass moments of inertia of rods, rings, discs, spheres and cones. Separate chapters cover virtual work and stability of equilibrium, and friction including angle of repose, ladder, wedge and belt friction. The dynamics part deals with kinematics of particles and rigid bodies (rectilinear and curvilinear motion, projectile motion, relative motion, planar rigid body motion) and kinetics (Newton's laws, equations of motion, D'Alembert's principle), followed by work, energy and power, and impulse and momentum with central impact and systems of variable mass.
